Taxes: The county’s gross tax digest has grown from 802 million dollars in 2002 to 1.737 billion dollars in 2007.

The mill rate has dropped from the 1994 rate of 21.65 mills to 13.981 mills in 2007 in the unincorporated areas (the lowest in the state).

The city of Greensboro levy’s 5.73 mills and Union Point 8.9 mills.

The county adds 3 cents to the state’s 4 cents in sales tax.

The effective rate ( tax/$1,000) in the county is $5.59 The County and the cities of Greensboro and Union Point provide advalorem tax concessions for certain types of inventory common to manufacturing and warehousing operations ( Freeport).


Education: The Greene County School System serves PreK-12th grade students in Greene County.  The current enrollment is 2107.  The Pre-School is in Greensboro.  Two elementary schools serve the county with one being in Union Point and one in Greensboro.  The middle school and high school are in Greensboro.  The class of 06/07 graduated 74 students.  The student to teacher ratio is 14 students per teacher and the total system cost is $10,655 per student for the 2007 fiscal year.  Lake Oconee Academy (charter school) opened this year serving the Greene County area with 12 students in K-5.  Plans are to add a class per year at Lake Oconee Academy. 

Greene County has one private school serving students K3-12th grade in Siloam.  The Redeemer Episcopal Academy also opened in the fall of 2007 with Pre-K-2nd grade and plans to add classes each year in the future.

Athens Technical College has a satellite campus in Greensboro offering GED, College Credit and customized training programs
